LESSON PLAN

End of lesson: show video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhQVustYV24

in class and set homework (individual):

Watch the video about/with Greta Thunberg again and write the answers to the following questions down in your notebook:

  1. Why did Greta not fly to NY as most people would do?

  2. What is meant by the “Greta effect”?

  3. What should people do, according to Greta?

  4. What does Greta think of NY?

Lesson 1 – in computer room:

In groups of 3-4: compare your answers to questions 1-4 (homework) and fill in the form.

Watch https://youtu.be/zKTQW5i9_p8. Discuss and answer these questions (fill in the form)

  1. What results of climate change does Greta mention in the video?

  2. Greta says: "How dare you". What is her accusation? Do you agree? Why (not)?

  3. What does Greta want her audience (young and old) to do?

  4. Is Greta someone you can identify with? Why (not)?

Read the first 5 paragraphs of this article:

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/aug/14/greta-thunberg-sets-sail-plymouth-climate-us-trump.

Watch the video and answer these questions (fill in the form).

  1. What is a "gap year"? Shouldn't Greta be in school?

  2. Why is the United States called "the heart of climate darkness"?

  3. Look at the picture of the yacht and explain why it is climate friendly.

Finally, write down (at least) two positive things you have learned today about Greta and her mission.

Print the group form with your answers and hand it in.

Lesson 2 – in computer room:

As a group, write an informal e-mail (140-190 words) to Greta.

  • Explain who you are and how you have heard about her;

  • Express your feelings about how someone her age has already met world leaders;

  • Ask her if she feels those leaders will change their politics;

  • Tell her how you yourselves feel about taking a plane to a (holiday) destination abroad and if learning about this issue in class has made you change your opinion;

  • Tell her how responsible (or not) you feel in helping solve the climate problem in that way;

  • Ask her if there are more/other ways in which we can all help? OR: tell her about any decisions you yourselves have made or will make (e.g. stop eating meat / buy less / start a political movement).

End your e-mail appropriately, sign off with all your names.

Print the group e-mail and hand it in for feedback (teacher/classmates).

Finally, answer these three questions:

  1. What have you learned from watching the videos and talking about them?

  2. Now that you have discussed this subject, do you think it is OK to fly abroad for a holiday?

  3. Has learning about this issue changed your opinion (before and after)? If so, in what way(s) and why? If not: explain whether you have found new arguments for your first opinion.
